Karen further develop her passion in art by following Japanese painter 大豐世紀先生 for traditional japanese painting, nihonga, 日本画, 岩繪 since 2008. In the same year, Karen also started her practice in Ikebanna with 森 孝栄 先生, 未生流 and received the Master license for kakubana 格花 and shin-ka 新花 from Misho-ryu 未生流 in 2017.
Nihonga is based on painting styles that have evolved for over a thousand years. The materials used are traditional elements developed during that long history. With the support of paper, silk, wood and plaster, we apply sumi ink, mineral pigments, white gofun (a white pigment made from pulverized seashells), and other natural powder pigments from natural ingredients, such as coral, shells, semi-precious stones like malachite, azurite, cinnabar and etc with nikawa, an animal glue, as the adhesive. And incorporate with Gold, silver and other metals leaf in the paintings.
Misho-ryu 未生流 is a school of ikebana. It was established by Ippo Mishosai in 1807. Kakubana, the ikebana in classical style, and Shinka, the new style for everyday settings, are the major catagories in Misho-ryu. It is believed that the life of flowers is always short. In order to express this life to the fullest, it is necessary to practice the styles repeatedly and each time, to handle the vase, flowers, branches and leaves with a new feeling.
With the exceptional arts and design background, Karen commissioned by international corporations for arts and design related projects, including a diamonds on japanese painting for DTC, painting on art display for Agnes b, figure creations for HK Creative Ecologies, and other commercial cross-over for IPSA, Canon, Ester Lauder 50th anniversary and etc.
